Bodmin Moor is a granite moorland in northeastern Cornwall, and offers a dramatic landscape with granite tors rise from the rolling moorland. During the Bronze Age, Bodmin Moor was densely populated and now many prehistoric stone barrows and circles lie scattered across the moor. Today it is thinly populated aside from the small village of Bolventor. On the southern slopes of the moor lies Dozmary Pool, where, according to Arthurian legend, Sir Bedivere threw Excalibur to The Lady of the Lake.
Bodmin Moor has been officially designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The highest point is Brown Willy at 420 m (1378 ft), also the highest point in Cornwall. Rough Tor at 1,311' makes an excellent viewpoint over the surrounding area. Wetland sites on the moor include Colliford Lake, a large reservoir, and Dozmary Pool.
Bolventor is home to Cornwall's most famous inn, the Jamaica Inn, immortalised by the novelist Daphne du Maurier. It is now a hotel and restaurant serving excellent food, as well as providing enough smuggling and du Maurier memorabilia to keep enthusiasts happy. The next door Museum of Curiosity houses a collection of exhibits which was assembled by the Victorian taxidermist, Walter Potter.
A more recent phenomenon of the Moor is the so called Beast of Bodmin. There have been many reported sightings of a big cat on Bodmin Moor for many years, and in the early 1990's, when farmers found their animals savaged, speculation began to circulate in the national press as to whether a big cat, a panther or perhaps a leopard was living wild on the moor. The mystery is still unsolved as a skull thought to belong to the cat proved to have been from an animal which died overseas. So keep your eyes open and your camera handy!
